Prayer for Humility

Read Galatians 5:13-15.

"But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another." Galatians 5:15 (ESV)

Why does Christ save men and women? The apostle Paul reminded the Galatians that Christ gives people what they do not deserve to set them free, save them, and give them hope. If you are a Christian, you are free, and your freedom is a calling for serving and for encouraging!

Why did Paul use the image of "bite and devour"? He wanted to demonstrate the severity, danger, and wickedness of requiring submission to the Law [specifically circumcision] for one truly to be a Christian. By telling others to submit to circumcision, Galatians were tearing each other apart with words, as animals tear apart other animals with their teeth. To engage in such behavior is not to "serve one another" (Gal. 5:13). Pride!

Why did Paul caution the Galatians to "watch out" not to eventually destroy themselves? They faced two dangers you and I also face. Some proudly thought they did not need freedom; others thought did not need forgiveness. To engage in either behavior is not to "serve one another" (Gal. 5:13). Pride!

What is the answer to pride? We must recognize the calling of God, repent of our sin, and trust in God!

PRAYER: Our Father, give us grace to consider your calling, not because of our righteousness, but only by your grace.
