Becoming one in Christ

40 Days of Prayer

Day 2

The Purpose of Unity

Leo Endel, Executive Director MWBC

Read John 17:20-26

"I am in them and you are in me, so that they may be made completely one, that the world may know you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me." John 17:23 (CSB)

In March 2010, police arrested a couple following the death of their daughter Sarang. An autopsy revealed that she died of malnutrition. Ironically, the child had been neglected because the parents were distracted, playing a video game that allowed them to raise a virtual child.

The 21st century American Church is often distracted. We set out to do good things for the Kingdom of God, but if we are not united in our love for Christ and our love for each other, we will fail at our mission to go and make disciples (Matthew 28:19).

Jesus demonstrated that authentic unity is marked by love. In John 13:35, he told us that we would be known by our love for one another. The unavoidable truth of this passage is our unity and our love are convincing evidences that Jesus is the one sent by God the Father. Conversely, our lack of live testifies against the power and divinity of Christ.

Could it be that our lack of unity is preventing others from seeing the glory of Christ and putting their faith in Him?

PRAYER: Lord, show us how to be one in Christ. Show us how to love each other without distraction. Show us how to keep our eyes on Jesus and let the distraction of our differences fall away "so that the world may believe" the Father sent His Son.
