Becoming one in Christ

40 Days of Prayer

Day 24

Teach one Another

Lenard Tavernelli, Pastor, Fellowship, Kenosha WI

Read Colossians 3:12-17

"Let the word of Christ dwell in your richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

How can the gospel, the "word of Christ," dwell richly and abundantly in the church so the peace of Christ reigns in the church (Col. 3:15)? Paul's answer: we all must teach and admonish one another with all wisdom--not worldly wisdom, but the fullness of wisdom that is found in Jesus Christ alone (Col. 2:3).

There are many ways to teach one another, such as through personal conversations, Bible studies, and parental instruction. But Paul gives one way we might easily miss: through congregational singing of "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs."

What we sing (the content of our songs) is important. That we sing is likewise important. We sing to God as the overflow of our grace-changed hearts.

But our singing isn't only to God. We are also building up fellow believers, and even instructing unbelievers, teaching the truths about God and our hope in Jesus Christ. We proclaim to them, "I believe the gospel. So should you."

PRAYER: Father, help us to teach one another, including through our singing. Help me to surrender my anxieties and fears to you, and to teach others the truth in every way you command. Amen.
